Derek Eugene Mathis, 48, of Centralia passed away peacefully at his home on February 17, 2017.
He was born February 20, 1968 in Centralia, Illinois son of Marzeal Marshall and Evongana Mathis.
Derek was a member of the 1986 class at CHS, graduating with a 4.9 GPA and full four-year academic scholarship to the University of Illinois. Derek was a very well-rounded individual both academically and athletically, a member of the football, baseball, basketball and track teams at CHS, active in NHS, Scholar Bowl, FBLA, and won the MVP award in football and other academic acknowledgements as well. He credited his success to his mother and a close neighborhood friend, Reverend Johnson, as well as being self-motivated. He worked as an Administrative Assistant for Rev. Hubert Bankhead while he worked Kaskaskia College. He attended the University of Champaign, University of Illinois Chicago, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he obtained a Business Administration degree. Derek dedicated endless hours to Second Baptist Church where he served as a janitor, as well as a tutor for the neighborhood children. He also worked for General Tire in Mt. Vernon for many years. Among his many interests, serving and preparing food for the church, mentoring others, and football were just a few. Playing football was one of his favorite past times, in addition to being an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Most importantly he will be remembered for his generous spirit, how he would continually look out for others, and always made time for everyone.
He leaves to cherish his memories with his beloved mother Evongana Mathis; sister Tysha A. Mathis and special friend Nathan and nieces Courtney Herron and Dereka Waithe; and sister Racquel Marshall and niece Myrra’cal Thomas; his brother Marzeal Marshall Jr. and nephews Marzeal Marshall III and Keshawn Marshall all Centralia, special friends, Clifford and Jessica Marshall; A host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, the late Marzeal Marshall Sr; grandmothers, Agnes (Jones) Mathis and Tiny Mae Marshall; grandfathers, Jesse Mathis and George Marshall; uncles, Gary Joy “Country” Jones, Seneca Jones, Johnny Ray Jones, Martez Marshall.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visiting hours on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. -1:00 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church in Centralia. Celebration of life service will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Isaac Parker officiating. Interment will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery in Centralia.
