Doris Wilkerson, 90, of Centralia passed away April 5, 2017 at Fireside House of Centralia. Doris was born on March 16, 1927 in Centralia, Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Ferne (Stoessiger) VanBuskirk. She married Glenn H. Hooper on September 30, 1950 and one son was born of this union. They later divorced. Doris married Jack E. Wilkerson February 15, 1986 and he preceded her in death.

She is survived by her devoted son, Michael Hooper and wife Kathryn of Jacksonville, OR; and cherished grandchildren, Alyssa Hooper of Sisters, OR and Jared Hooper of Jacksonville, OR.

Doris was preceded in death by both of her parents, and husband Jack E. Wilkerson.
Mrs. Wilkerson was a 1945 graduate of Centralia High School, and continued on to attend Centralia Jr. College, Southern Illinois Normal College “SIU Carbondale” as well as take classes at Texas Tech later on in life. Doris was a fiscal officer for 9 years at B.C.M.W. Community Services and accounting clerk with Midland Area Agency of Aging for 8 years. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She also belonged to the V.F.W. and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Doris and her husband Jack were snowbirds in Florida, and enjoyed traveling to Mexico. She also adored going on cruises. Doris was an avid reader. Until a year ago you could find Doris lifting weights and walking at the Rec Center, she was known for walking 8 miles a day for many years.

It was a lifetime wish of Doris’ to donate her body to science, and that request will be carried out at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to her two fondest charities; St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children. Doris’ Family would like to thank the staff at Fireside Nursing Home for their tender loving care of her and express their gratitude for her faithful and cherished friends Debbie, Marcelline, Melissa, Aggie, Jeanette, Peggy, and numerous others. As per Doris’ wishes there will be no service.
