The angels called LaVeeda Gardner home, into the open arms of her Savior on October 9, 2017 at 7:33 a.m. at SSM St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, IL. LaVeeda was 89 years old.

LaVeeda, at an early age professed her commitment to Christ at Second Missionary Baptist Church. LaVeeda was always involved in activities at the church from a young girl into adulthood. Her mother was a long time organist at the church and her grandmother, Laura Leake, was a founding member of Second Missionary Baptist Church.

LaVeeda was born on March 9, 1928 in Centralia the daughter of Clarence “Daddy Bill” and Opal (Leake) Locke. She married Walter C. “Dub” Gardner, Sr. on November 16, 1947 and he preceded her in death on August 21, 1975. To that union twelve children were born, one being still born.

Mrs. Gardner is survived by her loving children, LaRisa “Penny” Garrett (Eldo) of Milwaukee; Joan Crawford of Centralia, Kirby Gardner of Houston, TX, Nancy LaRoche (Victor) of Carolina, Lance Gardner (Gwen) of Los Angeles, CA, Darlene Gardner of Milwaukee, WI, Jerome Gardner of Atlanta, GA, Stacey Gardner and (Lela) of O’Fallon, IL, Franciene Barnes of Dayton, OH, Walter Gardner, Jr. of Centralia, IL; caring brother, Roy Lee Locke (Bertha); and a “want to be” and accepted son Otis Bryant; 24 precious grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter “Dub” Gardner; a son Walter Remon; a sister Veneta Locke; 2 brother, Chauncey and William (Corky) Locke; a great- grandson, Kainon; a great-granddaughter, Brooklyn.

Mrs. Gardner was retired from Project Bread Meal Site as a supervisor. She was a member of the Young Matrons Club which is one of the oldest civic clubs in Centalia still in existence. Mrs. Gardner also held several positions in the church, usher being one of these. She influenced countless youth in her life, many of whom thought of her as “Mama Veeda”. LaVeeda’s door has never been locked, that is until her daughter Joan moved here. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Centralia with Reverend Jason Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with a repast in the Second Missionary Baptist Church’s fellowship hall immediately following the interment. Family and friends may call from 5:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. Friday October 13 at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia and from 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church until the time of services.
