December 28, 2017

Jim Phillips, 71, of Iuka, formerly of Peoria, entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 28, 2017 at SSM St. Louis University Hospital. He was born September 26, 1946, the son of Lloyd and Shirley (Carson) Phillips. He married Jenette Cannon and she preceded him in death in 2008. Jim later married Amber Weyhrich in October of 2010.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Amber Weyhrich of Iuka; loving children Joe Phillips of Metamora, Amie Rogers of Morton, Rachel Franklin of Peoria, Sarah Boley of Georgia, and Stephanie Trickey of NY and their spouses; 17 cherished grandchildren; fond brother and sister Dan Phillips of Iowa and Pat Brown of Maple Park, IL; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Jim served in the United States Navy for 12 years. He also served as a pastor and held many other ministry roles throughout his life. He considered his calling in life to be an Ambassador of Hope, which he lived out through his passion of counseling people from all walks of life. He began his counseling career in 1981 and later co-founded New Horizons Counseling Services, previously Associates in Christian Counseling. He touched many people’s lives throughout the Marion County area and the greater Peoria area with his gift of counseling.

Jim began his life’s journey on a farm in Iowa, that later took him into many places and spaces with his work, career and ministry. He most enjoyed spending time outdoors, in the woods on walks, riding horses, and sitting on the back porch. He loved to see change take place in people and in the environments he lived. He touched thousands of lives and is remembered as a man that was ‘larger than life’. He held many a hand, heart and spoke life into all who knew him.

A celebration of life service for Jim will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2017 at Salem Apostolic Church with Pastor Josh Conley, Pastor Calvin Jean, and Pastor Don Wallace officiating. Military rites will be accorded following the services by the Salem VFW Post #128. The family asks that in lieu of flowers to consider memorial contributions in Jim’s memory be made to the Kinmundy Christian Church with funds being allocated towards the Youth Group Room. Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is assisting the family with services.
