Herbert Dean Patterson, 89, formerly of Centralia, passed away at his residence in Mt. Vernon, IL Saturday, May 2, 2020. He was born on March 17, 1931 the son of John and Esther (Gutzler) Patterson in Centralia, IL. He married Mary Thompson together they had 3 children and later divorced. He then married Velma Schultz, and she preceded him in death.

Herbert is survived by daughters, Beth Quick (Steven) of Mt. Vernon, IL and Tina Vonderheide (Paul) of Arnold, MO; grandchildren, Jenna Reynolds (Thomas) of Mt. Vernon, IL, Jaclyn Quick of Sacramento, CA, Ryan Quick (Chantelle) of Stillwater, OK, Abby Vonderheide of Arnold, MO; great-grandchildren, Elliette Reynolds, Emmett Quick, Everett Reynolds; and many nieces and nephews.

Herbert was a 1949 Graduate of Centralia High School. He proudly served his Country in the Illinois National Guard during the Korean War. Herbert returned to Centralia to raise his family and work for the IC Railroad.

Herbert was a member of Calumet Street Christian Church in Centralia. He also was a Sports Official from 1955 to 1983 in Basketball & 1957 to 1983 in Football. He enjoyed participating in several sports and later encouraged his grandchildren as they participated in sports, band, & other activities. Herbert enjoyed swimming, walking, & dancing.

Mr. Patterson was preceded in death by both his parents, John and Esther Patterson; wife, Velma Patterson, daughter, Debra L. Patterson, brothers John, Robert, George, Charles, Joseph and sister, Ruth.

Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia is honored to be assisting the family of Herbert Patterson with arrangements. A celebration of life service was held privately. Memorials may be made in Herbert’s honor to Leukemia Foundation, Centralia Recreation Complex, or Centralia Historical Society and will be accepted at the funeral home in Centralia.
