Gary Downes

Gary Downes, 71, of Centralia passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born on November 10, 1951, the son of Charley and Stella (Allen) Downes in Centralia.

Survivors include his special nephew Wil Downes and wife Tressie of South Carolina; his fur babies, his rat terrier Snoopy and his cat Ms. Kitty; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Charley and Stella Downes; and his brothers Webb, Charles and Ivan Downes.

Gary was a loyal employee and a welcome face at Centralia’s Walmart where he worked for over 25 years. He liked to enjoy some fresh air while out fishing for his next big catch. Gary was a social butterfly who loved to entertain at his home and be entertained on an adventurous night out. He was a football fan who could be found hollering for his favorite team to win. Gary loved to listen to and sing along with Bob Dillon songs. Gary and his dog Snoopy were the best of friends and Gary was proud to spoil him in every way. 

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Wamac Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Paul Holsapple officiating. Memorials may be made in Gary’s honor to the Family’s Wishes and will be accepted for the family at Irvin Macz Funeral Home 234 S. Elm St. Centralia, IL 62801.
