Dr. William Herman Lindenberg, 92, of Centralia passed away peacefully Friday, September 25, 2026, at Fireside House in Centralia. He was born on October 27, 1933, in Centralia, the son of Elmer Clement and Fern (Halbert) Lindenberg. He married his true love and partner through sixty-seven dedicated years of marriage, Jean Kirby, on September 5, 1959, in Warrenville, IL.

Along with his beloved wife, Jean Lindenberg, survivors include his three sons, Michael Lindenberg of Rhode Island, Mark Lindenberg and wife, Mary of Rhode Island, and Matthew Lindenberg and wife Robin of South Carolina; grandchildren, Christina Lindenberg, Jennifer Posner, Jason Lindenberg, Meredith Lindenberg, Marissa Lindenberg, Matthew Lindenberg, Peyton Lindenberg, Alec Lindenberg, and Kennedy Lindenberg; great-grandchildren, Mason, Ethan, Owen, Pierson, Christian, and Carter; and dear friends, Brian and Marilyn Britton.

Dr. Lindenberg was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Fern Lindenberg.

William Lindenberg’s journey in dentistry began at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. A United States Air Force veteran, he served as a dentist from 1959-1964. He went on to build a dental practice in Centralia, Illinois, where he cared for generations of patients over the course of 30 years. For 20 of those years, he had a special partner by his side—his wife, Jean who complimented his practice as his dental assistant. Their partnership was a wonderful reflection of their commitment to one another and to their patients. Dr. Lindenberg believed in giving back and helping strengthen the organizations and communities of which he was a part. He served in numerous organizations throughout his life, including, President of the Illinois State Dental Association. He also served locally as a former President of the Centralia Elks and a member of the Optimist Club. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Centralia, Dr. Lindenberg found a place of worship, fellowship, and service. Dr. Lindenberg was an avid supporter of Centralia Orphans basketball, taking great pride in his hometown and its young athletes. He was also a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, enjoying the excitement, tradition, and memories that came with following his favorite team. On the golf course, he could relax, enjoy the company of friends, and leave the demands of everyday life behind. Dr. Lindenberg’s life was defined not only by the titles he held or the organizations he served, but by the people he touched along the way. Patients trusted him. Colleagues respected him. Friends valued him. His community counted on him. And his family knew the man behind all of those accomplishments—the husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose presence made life richer. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was deeply loved, greatly respected, and will be profoundly missed.

To honor Dr. Lindenberg’s wishes to continue to give back to society, his earthly remains were donated to science. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in Dr. Lindenberg’s honor to the First United Methodist Church of Centralia or St. Jude Children’s Hospital and will be accepted for his family at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia.
