Joseph Jungsik Kang, age 46, of O'Fallon, Illinois, formerly of Centralia, Illinois, passed away at 7:15 A.M. on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born on August 8, 1967 in Seoul, Korea, the son of Ki Tae and Jung (Cha) Kang. He married Julie (Perez) Mullinax on May 28, 1994 at the Eternity Baptist Church in Centralia, Illinois and she survives in O'Fallon, Illinois. In addition to his wife of 20 years, Mr. Kang is survived by 2 daughters Laura Ashley (Mullinax) Gibbs and husband Wade of Fairview Heights, Illinois and Rachel Kang of O'Fallon, Illinois, grandson Matthew Gibbs of Fairview Heights, Illinois, mother Jung Kang of San Diego, California, 2 brothers Joon Kang of Korea and Mike Kang of New York, New York, 2 sisters Michelle Song of Brazil and Irene Kim and husband Reverend Joshua of San Diego, California, 2 nephews First Lieutenant David Kim of San Diego, California and Jonathan Kim of San Diego, California, mother-in-law Dixie Perez of Centralia, Illinois and sister-in-law Kelly Perez-Smith and husband Joseph of Centralia, Illinois. Mr. Kang was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law Frank Perez. Mr. Kang loved his church as he attended the First Baptist Church in Fairview Heights, Illinois and was a former member of the Eternity Baptist Church in Centralia, Illinois. He loved to sing and belonged to the choir at his church. In the years past, he attended the Promise Keepers. Mr. Kang loved new cars and was a former member of the Little Egypt Corvette Club. He also loved motorcycles. He was discharged as a Sergeant from U.S. Air Force serving his country from June 11, 1987 until June 10, 1993. He enjoyed the time he spent with his family especially traveling to Hawaii for family vacations. Mr. Kang managed the Histology Lab at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in La Jolla, California. He previously worked in the Histology Lab at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia, Illinois. Mr. Kang graduated from McKendree University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He has lived in O'Fallon, Illinois for the last 15 years and formerly lived in Centralia, Illinois from 1993 to 1999. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia, Illinois with Pastor Mike Cash, Pastor Jonathan Urshan, First Lieutenant David Kim and Mr. Daniel Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park near Centralia, Illinois with Military Honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force, Centralia American Legion Post 446 and V.F.W. Post # 2055. Friends may call from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made in Mr. Kang's memory to Debra Watson, a close family friend who is also a cancer victim or the American Cancer Society and will be received by Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia, Illinois.
