Obituary

Leona Elizabeth Koelling-Jonas, age 102, of Centralia, Illinois went to be with her Lord at 1:45 A.M. on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Centralia Manor in Centralia, Illinois. She was born on April 22, 1911 in Centralia, Illinois, the daughter of William H. and Ida (Hohmann) Koelling. She married Leo H. Jonas on August 2, 1983 in Centralia, Illinois and he preceded her in death on March 31, 1986. Mrs. Koelling-Jonas is survived by 5 cousins Elvera Kirkland of Centralia, Illinois, who had been her caretaker for 8 years, Marilyn May of Evansville, Indiana, Jeanette Nelson of Littleton, Colorado, Sandy Evans of St. Louis, Missouri and Jerome Hohmann of Wheaton, Illinois and many family relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brother Melvin Koelling, who passed away in 1937. Mrs. Koelling-Jonas was the oldest member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, Illinois, where she was a very active member all her life, holding many offices in the church. She belonged to the choir for many years, also having a young girls choir she directed for many years. Mrs. Koelling-Jonas organized the Walther League within the church. Mrs. Koelling-Jonas was a member of the Centralia Cultural Society and was in charge of decorating the stage in the old high school for Christmas program over a span of 30 years. She was also a member of the choral group. She was a member of the Desk and Derrick. She enjoyed decorating for the different holidays and church banquets. It was a passion of hers to go shopping and eating out at different restaurants. Mrs. Koelling-Jonas worked for a few years at Hutters Clothing Store in Centralia, Illinois and then started working as a secretary for Leo H. Jonas and worked for him for 57 years. She attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School, high school and graduated from Browns Business College in 1927. She was a staunch supporter of the Kaskaskia College Scholarship Fund. She was a life long resident of Centralia, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, February 10, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, Illinois with Reverend Mark Girardin and Revered Perry Schefelker officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park near Centralia, Illinois. Friends may call from 4:00 P.M. To 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, Illinois and from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the church. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in Mrs. Koelling-Jonas' honor to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, Illinois or Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School and will be received at the Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia, Illinois.
