Richard "Rick" McElroy , 61, of Carlyle passed away Saturday, May 16, 2020 at his home in Carlyle being cared for by his devoted wife. He was born on September 6, 1958 the son of Doris (Rhynes) Slater in Centralia. He married the love of his life, Nancy Jondro on April 18, 1997 in Carlyle and she survives in Carlyle.

Along with his beloved wife of 23 years, Nancy, survivors include his children, son, Christopher McElroy (Trish) of Centralia, daughter, Kylee Black of Alabama, stepsons, Benjamin Johnson (fiancée Kacey Guthrie) of Carlyle, and Samuel Johnson of Carlyle; grandchildren, Anthony McElroy, Taylor McElroy, Griffin Johnson, Jonah Johnson; great-grandson, Bentley McElroy; brother, Randy Vandever (Kim Thole) of Breese; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Slater; step-father, Walter Slater; brothers, Allen Rhynes, and Douglas McElroy.

Rick worked as a heavy equipment operator and served as a member of Operator's Local 520. He was also a member of Sandoval Masonic Lodge, ABATE, and Shriners. Through these memberships, Rick truly looked forward to helping every year at the Shriners' Circus. He loved driving to swap meets with his friends in ABATE. Rick enjoyed quiet time in the woods while deer hunting. He kept his lawn spotless and stretched his creative muscles with his amazing woodworking projects. Rick was a social butterfly, and never met a stranger. He loved playing cards and trying his luck on the "machines". Rick was friendly, fun to be around, and hardworking. He will be greatly missed.

Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is privileged to be assisting the family of Rick McElroy with arrangements. A celebration of life service will be held at a date in the future. Memorials may be made in Rick's honor to Shriners Hospital for Children and will be accepted at the funeral home.
