William Edwin "Willie" Slininger, age 66, of Centralia, Illinois, passed away at 12:55 P.M. on Monday, February 3, 2014 at his home in Centralia, Illinois. He was born on September 27, 1947, in Glendale, California, the son of Joseph E., Sr. and Dorothy Mathilda Ades (Shaw) Slininger. He married Deborah "Debbie" Sessions on April 16, 1977 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Temple in Los Angeles, California and she survives in Centralia, Illinois.
In addition to his wife of 36 years, Mr, Slininger is survived by his mother Dorothy Slininger of Centralia, Illinois, 1 daughter Steffany Slininger and son-in-law Scott Wessling of Centralia, Illinois,2 grandchildren Courtney and Cooper Wessling of Centralia, Illinois, 1 sister Rita Wetherbee and husband Bud of Bonnieville, Kentucky, 4 brothers Russell Slininger and wife Lisa of Folsom, California, Mike Slininger of Salem, Illinois, Garry Slininger and wife Rhonda of Centralia, Illinois, and Jody Slininger and wife Debby of Centralia, Illinois, father-in-law William Sessions, Jr., mother-in-law Ethel Rose (Raff) Sessions, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Mr. Slininger was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Mr. Slininger attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Centralia, Illinois. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War in Vietnam and 1 year in Germany. He enjoyed bowling for over 30 years, playing cards, tending to his garden and golfing. He was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mr. Slininger liked going to country music concerts and made friends with many of the country music stars. He cherished his retirement years and the time he spent with his family especially his grandchildren.
Mr. Slininger retired as a tire builder from General Tire in Mt. Vernon, Illinois in 2010 after 32 years of service. He moved to Centralia, Illinois 3 years ago and lived most of his life in Iuka, Illinois.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home in Centralia, Illinois with Brother John Rhiner from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Interment will follow in Iuka Cemetery in Iuka, Illinois with Military Honors accorded by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and V.F.W. Post 2055. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 12:00 noon at the funeral home. In honor of Willie's wishes, his family requests that friends wear jeans and shirt or St. Louis Cardinals clothing to his visitation and funeral services. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made in Mr. Slininger's honor to his Grandchildren's College Fund.
