Dorothy Spindler Obituary

Dorothy June Spindler, 90, of Huey passed away peacefully Monday, September 8, 2025, at BJC Memorial Hospital in Shiloh, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 3, 1935, in East Fork Township of Clinton County, IL. She was the daughter of George W. and Leona Mae (nee Heinrich) Cole. Dorothy married the love of her life, Bill Spindler on May 31, 1954, in Carlyle and he preceded her in death on May 21, 2017.

Survivors that will remember how Dorothy always put others’ needs before her own include her children, Donna Spindler of Huey, Billie Conrad and husband Tim of Salem, and Darla Spindler of Huey; granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Conrad of Salem; sister, Ruth Ford of Belleville; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Along with her husband of 62 years, Bill Spindler, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Leona Cole; sister, Julia Pruitt and husband Jack; brothers-in-law, Charles Spindler and wife Eunice, and Jim Ford ; and sister-in-law, Joyce Kleber.

Dorothy lived in Eastern Clinton County and later moved to Huey, next to the Spindler family, unaware she would marry the boy next door, her husband Bill. She was a faithful member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Carlyle and of AFSCME of the state of Illinois. Dorothy was a loyal employee of Warren G. Murray Center for twenty-three years in the dietary department. She was an amazing gardener, able to grow bountiful vegetable gardens and canning their fresh flavors to enjoy through the winter months. In more recent years, Dorothy found quiet times to nurture her beautiful flower gardens, marveling at the colors and beauty they brought to her yard. She liked the challenge of a good word search and looked forward to playing Bingo. Dorothy kept her eye out for cardinals and hummingbirds to add to her collections, and everyone thought of her when they would catch a glimpse of these birds. She shared her talent for crocheting and making quilts with grateful family and friends. Dorothy was diligent to be a loving, guiding presence in her granddaughter, Jessica’s life, and was so proud to be her Grandma. Days spent enjoying each other’s company and playing games are some of the most favorite memories that Dorothy’s family will cherish, and they will forever be thankful for the time spent together.
