Edith “Eddie” Leffew Obituary

Edith Catherine “Eddie” Leffew, 90, of Sandoval passed away peacefully Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. She was born on November 17, 1930 the daughter of Peter Ed and Catherine Lucille (Sitton) Thomas in Sandoval. She married Ernest Meng on August 29, 1952 in Sandoval and they later divorced. Edith married George Leffew on June 5, 2000 in Bowling Green and he preceded her in death.


Survivors that will remember Edith as the patriarch of the family include her children, Jeffry (Judi) Meng of St. Louis, Missouri, James (Carol Sue) Meng of Cahokia, Illinois; 8 cherished grandchildren, Kelly, Kristopher, Amanda, Faith, Melissa, April, J.D., and Joshua; 12 precious great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchild; sister, Rosemary Jourdan of Sandoval; and many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Along with her husband, George Leffew, Mrs. Leffew was preceded in death by both her parents, Ed and Catherine Thomas; brothers, William Thomas, Joseph Thomas and Ed Thomas; sisters, Agnes Farthing, Rita Lusch, Margaret Bowen, Ruth Perry, and Charlotte Carson; and her son, Jonathan Meng. 


Eddie was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Sandoval where she served on the Ladies Altar Sodality. She active in her community and was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge in Centralia and the Sandoval Women’s Club. Eddie loved to play cards and made lasting, treasured friendships in her Pinochle Club, with her fellow members. Eddie retired from Yellow Freight where she worked in sales from the St. Louis terminal for 32 loyal years. Eddie was a skilled seamstress that created beautiful clothing for her family, and herself, special items that her family still treasures. Eddie was an amazing example to her family and friends, and her legacy of generosity, creativity, and faith will never be forgotten.


Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval is privileged to be assisting the family of Edith Leffew with arrangements. A Catholic Mass will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Day Macz Funeral Home in Sandoval with Rev. Fr. Steven Pautler officiating. A visitation time to offer condolences to the family will be held from 4:00 p.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home, where those in attendance will be asked to wear a mask and the number of people in the church at one time will be limited. Memorials may be made in Edith’s honor to the Sandoval Fire Department.
