Obituary

John H. Harvey, 89, of Junction City passed away Friday, March 31, 2023, at his home. He was born on January 2, 1934, the son of John W. and Ada (Piercy) Harvey in Jefferson County. He married Gloria McDuffy and they later divorced. He married Shirley J. Wadkins on January 24, 1975 and she survives him in Junction City.

Along with his beloved wife of 48 years, Shirley Harvey, survivors include his daughter Marketa (Lamarr) Scott of Santa Fe, Texas; daughter-in-law Rose Harvey, of Salem; stepdaughters, Carolyn (Clifford) Corrie of Odin, and Marsha Mulligan of New York; stepson, John (Tanya) Nelson of Salem; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; his loyal yorkie, Buffy; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Fred Harvey, Marge Morgan, Faye Johnson, Nellie Houghland, and Corey Phelps; and his sons Russell Norman Harvey, and John H. Harvey Jr.

John was the co-owner, operator of General Contractors in Central City for many years. He was never afraid of hard work and his dedication to a job well done was apparent. He later worked as a superintendent for Southern Illinois Asphalt in Mt. Vernon. After retirement, John and his wife Shirley were blessed to travel in their RV all over the United States. John especially enjoyed the beauty of Alaska so much he went back a second time. He was a skilled fisherman and loved when the white bass were biting. John loved camp life, and he and Shirley made many great friendships and appreciated the beauty of every area they visited. John was an amazing provider for his family, known as a man of integrity, and had a soft heart when it came to his dog, Buffy. He will be deeply missed by friends and family, but never forgotten.

Per John’s wishes cremation rites were accorded and burial will take place at a future date at Boyd Cemetery in Jefferson County. Memorials may be made in John’s honor to his wife, Shirley Harvey and will be accepted for the family at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia.
