Loren Amason Obituary

Loren M. Amason, 69, of Centralia passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 18, 1951, the son of Curtis and Cecile (Robinson) Amason in Centralia. He married Peggy Wilkinson on August 4, 1973, and she survives in Centralia.

Along with his wife of 48 years, Peggy, he is survived by daughter Lori Rodaway and husband Jason; son Justin Amason and wife Natalie; grandchildren Turner and Larson Rodaway, and Scout and Thomas Amason; brother Curtis Amason and wife Eva of Colorado; sister Carolyn Heidemann and Carl Haas of North Carolina; father-in-law Sam Wilkinson; sisters-in-law Linda Amason, Angie Wilkinson and Mary Lustig and husband Rick; brother-in-law Richard Wilkinson; and several nieces and nephews and numerous students to which he would say, “I do not believe in teaching, I believe in guiding, the rest you have to learn yourselves!”

Mr. Amason was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Bill Amason.

Loren was a graduate of Centralia High School Class of 1969.  He got his master’s degree at SIUC. He began his teaching career at his Alma Mater, Centralia High, where he taught Biology for 35 years. Mr. Amason instilled his love of science in all his students, and had many former students follow in his footprints to pursue a career in Science. Loren loved and respected the outdoors and shared the joy of an adventure and the beauty of nature with his family. He looked forward with anticipation to his fishing trips to Amason’s Obabikon Bay Camp, on Lake of the Woods, Canada. Loren was a bird watcher, and he taught his grandkids how to call an owl and identify the different species of birds. His lake house was known as Camp Grandpa to the entire family. When his grandkids visited, he taught them the importance of picking up trash along the shore, protecting wildlife and the beauty of the lake. Loren was an avid reader and chess player. Loren loved his family and will always be remembered for the life lessons he shared.
