Roger Earl Jones heeded the trumpet call and went home to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning, February 10, 2021. Roger was born to the union of Robert and Edna (Smith) Jones on January 13, 1948 and had just celebrated his 73rd birthday.
Roger attended school in both Centralia and Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Cleveland Public Schools, he entered the Army and fought in the Viet Nam conflict. He was honorably discharged after serving his time and returned to Cleveland. He met and married the love of his life, Dorothea, and fathered a son, Roger. Although they were divorced, Dorothea and Roger were very close. He was especially proud of his son and granddaughter (Jalisse), who are both police officers in Cleveland.
Roger was taught early in life that his path would be directed by God, but he would travel many other roads before reaching the destiny that God had laid out for him. He earned a Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts from Northwestern College of Allied Science. He then attended the Seminary and was ordained as an Orthodox Catholic Priest in Manhattan, New York. However, he did not stop there, he also received his certification in Christian Family Counseling. Roger held Bible Study in his home and loved talking about religion and different beliefs.
Roger was affectionately called “Pookie” by his sister, Theresa (a nickname given to him by their mother), who was always looking out for her “baby brother.” They were extremely close, and talked on the phone every day or every other day, to the very end. Theresa would drive from Cleveland to Centralia, at least twice a year to visit Roger, especially after the death of their father. He loved to see her coming because he knew it was time for “some good cooking.”
Roger was a quiet and soft-spoken kind of guy, who never raised his voice (except when he talked to his hard-of-hearing sister, Theresa). You never knew if he was upset, angry, or just laid back, because his voice never changed. He loved sharing his wisdom, knowledge, and belief in God to all who would listen.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edna (Smith) Jones; and grandmother, Willie B. Jones.
Roger leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Roger (Cleveland); the love of his life, Dorothea (Cleveland); his sisters, Theresa Jones Wilson (Cleveland), Sheila Howard (Cleveland), Robyn Jones Scrutchins (Lafayette, IN); his brother, Jerome Howard (Centralia); his grandchildren, Roger Ronnell, Jayden, Blake, Aaron, and Jalisse (Cleveland); his great Grandchild, Oliee (Cleveland); and a host of cousins (especially Garland Johnson and Rick Garrett), nieces, nephews, and friends (especially Edsel and Peggy).
